Most components come and go without making much of an impact on the sport.

“Check it out, they added another gear.” Cool.

“Oh look, they made it lighter and stiffer. They made this thing less stiff and this other thing has more anti-rise, or anti-squat, or whatever.” Neat.

“Holy shit, Nancy, call The Times! There’s room for two bottle cages!”

The majority of things are iterations of other things, but every now and then something pops up and triggers a complete tidal shift. The Mavic Crossmax UST is one of those things. Sure, you could say that the very first tubeless bicycle wheel system was just another iteration of The Wheel. But you’d be wrong. It was something entirely new. Well, not entirely—the wheels were still round.
